The story is set in ancient times, a world of humans, spirits, and gods. Xie Xuechen (played by Zhang Binbin), the aloof andpowerful young leader of the Snow City and head of the Immortal Alliance, is aprodigious sword cultivator. Unbeknownst to him, he is the reincarnation of Emperor Zhao Ming, carrying the memories andpower of hispast life. Mu Xuanling (played by Sun Zhenni), is the seductive and spirited Holy Maiden of the Dark Domain, a half-demon cultivator. She is the reincarnation of the ChaosPearl, also unaware of her true identity andpower.
Theirpaths collide when Mu Xuanling saves a gravely injured Xie Xuechen. She uses this life debt to compel him to travel with her. Although they represent opposing forces – light and darkness – they find themselves drawn to each other. Their journey together is fraught with danger,political intrigue, and the uncovering of a conspiracy surrounding thepowerful artifact known as the "ChaosPearl."
The series explores not only thepresent interactions between Xie Xuechen and Mu Xuanling but also theirprevious incarnations. Emperor Zhao Ming, in ancient times, sacrificed himself toprotect humanity from the gods. His lover, the ChaosPearl, desperately saved a fragment of his soul, setting in motion a cycle of reincarnation that spans thousands of years. The drama masterfully reveals how thesepast lives intertwine with their current one.
The central conflict revolves around the couple's differing loyalties and the ultimate sacrifice Mu Xuanling makes to save the world. Xie Xuechen, in turn, defies fate itself to rescue her. Eventually, Xie Xuechen's soul merges with Zhao Ming's, but the original Zhao Ming has become a fallen god. It is Mu Xuanling's love that awakens and redeems him, averting a catastrophic disaster and bringingpeace to the world.
