Plot Synopsis

Back for You: A Time-Twisting Detective Romance

Set in the vibrant and tumultuous era of early Republican China (specifically 1926 Shanghai),Back for Youblends suspenseful mystery with a unique romantic twist. The story centers around A Lai, a fresh-out-of-police-academy rookie who's beenplanted undercover in the notorious Jin Xin Company, run by thepowerful gang leader Jin Si. A Lai's mission is to gather evidence of Jin Si's illegal activities, including smuggling opium and weapons.

His first assignment? Assassinate Long Qi, the head of a rival gang. But things go sideways fast. A Lai's backup, Detective Huang, is delayed, and he runs into his nemesis, A Jia. Just when A Lai is cornered, a mysterious woman named Lu Na appears out of nowhere, saving him from certain death. She takes a bullet for him and falls into a coma. It turns out, Lu Na is a time traveler from 1946!

A Lai, nowpromoted to apatrol officer in the French Concession (thanks to hisperceived bravery, and aposthumous gift of a motorcycle from Detective Huang), discovers that Lu Na brought something with her: a series of comic books. To try and wake her, he begins reading them aloud. These aren't just any comics, though. Each story eerily mirrors the cases A Lai is investigating,providing cryptic clues and insights.

The drama unfolds with a fascinating structure: Lu Na's comic book stories intertwine with A Lai's real-life investigations. Here's a glimpse of some of them:

"The Visitor in the Book":A Lai reads Lu Na's comic, hoping to awaken her. He ends uphelping his cousin at aprivate clinic when two robbers, Scarface and Situ Xiong, burst in, demanding they operate on a wounded Situ Xiong. A Ming uses his medical knowledge toperform apneumothoraxprocedure, revealing that the robbers were involved in a gold shopheist. A Lai starts to see apattern: the comics are connected to his cases.

"Romantic Night":A serial killer is terrorizing the French Concession. A Lai notices similarities between the crimes and Lu Na's comic. He rushes to her bedside and finds that the comic has revealed newpages. The story features Chun Ying, a doctor whose fiancé, Jia Hua, has disappeared. She works a late shift, fearing the midnight killer. She meets a classmate, A Jie, at a hospital social event, who drugs her. A man in apeaked captries to approach Chun Ying but is stabbed by a thug. A Lai uses the comic's clues to gain new leads in his investigation.

"AstralProjection":Yuan San is obsessed with science fiction, and develops a delusion that a doctor's gold watch gave him thepower of teleportation. He uses his "superpower" to spy on others, falls for a ballerina named Michelle, and suspects a man named Allen of being a murderer, only to find chicken feathers and organs in Allen's trash. Again, A Lai finds real-world connections to his cases within this fantastical tale.

As A Lai continues to read, Lu Na shows signs of recovery, eventually awakening after a complete story is read. The two grow closer, developing feelings for each other as they work together to solve mysteries, using the comic book clues as their guide. Through thisprocess, A Lai begins to unravel the secrets of Lu Na's time travel.
