The Embers: Episode 3

Spoiler Alert

Amei arrives at a nonprofit organization to submit her study-abroad application to Xiao Yu. Xiao Yu instructs her to rest before a thorough medical exam. Suspicious of the strange tools in the room, Amei overhears Song En’s sinister plot to harvest her eggs for profit. Panicked, she flees and begs a man at the door for help—only to realize he’s working with Song En.

Meanwhile, Shu He and Nick confront Song En at his home about his ties to the murdered Laila. Song En initially denies knowing her, but Shu He produces surveillance photos of them entering a love hotel. Forced to confess, Song En claims their relationship was brief and that he lied to avoid trouble. When Shu He accuses him of dragging a suitcase seen in hotel footage (suspected to hold Laila’s body), Song En smugly points out the lack of fingerprint evidence. He spins a story about being drugged by Laila during a rendezvous, waking up alone, and insists the suitcase contained "legal adult toys." He cruelly dismisses Laila as "promiscuous," claiming her pregnancy was inevitable.

Elsewhere, Liao Siyuan clashes with his brother Liao Sibai over inconsistencies in a decade-old arson case. Sibai, haunted by guilt, wonders if he truly caused the fire, but Siyuan insists the investigation was flawed. Their mother, Qi Meihua, urges Siyuan to stop risking his life for answers. Defying warnings, Siyuan breaks into Song En’s clinic and uncovers files linking Laila to a girl named Caina, who died by suicide. He theorizes Song En uses his medical practice to traffic vulnerable women.

Song En returns to the clinic armed, planning to silence Siyuan. But Siyuan outsmarts him by live-streaming their confrontation, forcing Song En to retreat. Desperate, Song En contacts underworld figure Xun Ge, who orders him to act as bait in a larger scheme.

Siyuan tracks down Caina’s ex-boyfriend, Mike, who blames Laila for Caina’s financial struggles. Visiting Caina’s grieving mother, Siyuan learns Laila and Caina bonded after surviving abuse—Laila fled forced prostitution, and Caina took her in. Their sisterhood ended tragically with Caina’s suicide and Laila’s murder.

As Shu He secures a warrant, police raid Song En’s home, freeing captive surrogates—including Amei—but Song En escapes. A violent scuffle erupts with his thugs, and Shu He discovers Song En is now targeting Siyuan. The episode ends with Siyuan holding Laila’s belongings, unknowingly stepping closer to a deadly confrontation.

Key spoilers: The clinic files hint at a trafficking ring preying on marginalized women, with Caina and Laila as victims. Song En’s alliance with Xun Ge’s crime syndicate suggests deeper corruption, while the unresolved arson case ties the Liao brothers’ past to the present conspiracy.
