Me and My Family: Episode 23

Spoiler Alert

This episode dives deep into family dynamics, unexpected connections, and the challenges of balancing personal life with, well, more family life.

Xu Wenbin's parents are making it official with Su Su. They give her a red envelope, a traditional gesture signifying their approval of her relationship with Wenbin. They're happy to see their son so changed and encourage the couple to just be themselves, without worrying about parental interference.

Meanwhile, Gu Yunsu celebrates her birthday with a quiet, intimate gathering. She has a cake just for herself and calls her parents, Wu Limei and her husband, to join. It's a simple wish fulfilled: to have her parents with her on her special day. Wu Limei admits she didn't want to intrude on Su Su's time with Wenbin, showing a mother's understanding (and maybe a little matchmaking!).

Yunsu shares a piece of her cake with Wenbin, finally getting some alone time. But the romantic vibe is hilariously interrupted. Jingjing, Yunsu's friend, had prepared a special negligee for the occasion. However, when Yunsu emerges from the bathroom, she finds Wenbin playing cards with Gu Kangqi and Li Yan. It's awkward, to say the least, and Yunsu soon joins the game. Even after several rounds, no one seems ready to leave. Li Yan, despite Yunsu's hints, claims he's not tired at all.

The holiday ends, and it's time for Wu Limei's check-up. This time, it's a pelvic exam, and Li Jianxiong is a nervous wreck. He's still uncomfortable with Wenbin, his wife's doctor, being involved. But Wenbin has anticipated this and arranged for his mentor, a female doctor, to perform the examination. Li Jianxiong is instantly relieved and later presents Wenbin with a banner praising his thoughtfulness and skill. "Virtuous and understanding" are the key words here.

Gu Kangqi, sensing Li Yan's heartbreak over Yunsu, takes him to a karaoke bar, complete with a bevy of beautiful girls. He encourages Li Yan to move on – plenty of fish in the sea, and all that. Li Yan gets the message, but first love lost is hard to shake.

Li Yan aces his exams and gets to give a speech at school. He originally planned to confess his feelings to Yunsu, but he changes his mind. He decides to let go, asking Yunsu for a hug as a final farewell. He also decides to move into the school dorms, a decision that saddens Li Jianxiong, but he respects his son's growing independence.

Wu Liju's husband falls ill, and she's overwhelmed. She sends her grandson, Zaizai, to Wu Limei's house. Limei and Jianxiong get a crash course in childcare, and it's chaotic. Zaizai cries a lot, disrupting everyone's sleep. Because Limei is pregnant and needs rest, and Jianxiong has work, the responsibility falls on Yunsu. She's clueless about babies and turns to Wenbin for help. They take Zaizai out for a bike ride, and he loves it. Yunsu and Zaizai start to bond, but the exhaustion of childcare, combined with her writing deadlines, is taking its toll. Limei eventually takes Zaizai back to her room, with Jianxiong assisting.

Jianxiong's lack of sleep affects his work performance. He considers taking a leave, but a colleague warns him that his recent absences due to family matters have drawn attention from the higher-ups. Soon, Jianxiong is called in by his boss, not for his own issues, but to announce downsizing in his department. All contract workers will be let go. The episode ends on this somber note, highlighting the pressures of work and family colliding.
