Me and My Family: Episode 6

Spoiler Alert

This episode kicks off with the arrival of Wu Limei's mother (Gu Yunsu's grandma), who's come to help out with Li Mei's pregnancy. Grandma's arrival immediately throws a wrench into the family's routine, but in a mostly good way. She's a whirlwind of traditional Chinese care, cooking up a storm and making sure everyone is looked after. She dotes on Yun Su, who seems to relish having another family member around.

Grandma, however, quickly discovers that Li Mei wasn't entirely truthful about leaving her job. She and Yun Su thought Li Mei quit voluntarily due to the pregnancy, but Grandma finds out Li Mei was actually fired. This leads to a hilarious scene where Grandma and Yun Su confront Li Mei's former boss, the publisher. They go from polite and gift-bearing to completely savage, even drinking with the boss (who's a lightweight) and airing all their grievances about how Li Mei was treated. It's a satisfying moment of justice, as Li Mei eventually gets her due through labor arbitration, thanks to Yun Su.

Back at home, Grandma's well-meaning but old-fashioned ways start to clash with Li Mei's modern lifestyle. A prime example is Grandma's insistence that Li Mei use rapeseed oil instead of her fancy anti-stretch mark body oil. Grandma even brings a giant jug of the stuff, much to Li Mei's dismay.

Meanwhile, Yun Su takes Li Mei and Grandma to the hospital for a check-up. While Li Mei waits for results, Yun Su and Grandma attend a free infant care class. Yun Su expresses her disinterest in having children, a sentiment that Grandma strongly disagrees with. This hints at a potential future conflict between them. Li Mei's doctor, Xu Wenbin, reveals to her that Yun Su had been persistently badgering him for half a month, which touches Li Mei.

The episode takes a turn for the dramatic when Yun Su undergoes a labor pain simulation test. Li Mei, ever the blunt one, can't help but criticize Yun Su, calling her crazy. Grandma scolds Li Mei for her harsh words, and a hurt Yun Su leaves.

The tension continues on the way home, with everyone giving each other the silent treatment. Grandma insists on going to the market alone, and when she doesn't return after several hours, Li Mei and Yun Su go searching for her. They find her waiting patiently at a fish stall… for a specific fish to die. Apparently, Grandma wants a dead fish, but not one that's been dead too long. In a comical climax, the three women conspire to trick the fishmonger, with Yun Su dramatically "killing" the fish to finally get Grandma what she wants.
