It's almost New Year's, and the TV station is scheduling holiday shifts. Qian Wenhua tries to assign slots, but everyone's reluctant. Wen Yifan, after seeing a message from Sang Yan saying he won't be home until after the eighth day of the New Year, volunteers to work. Meanwhile, Su Haoan is busy buying gifts, trying to convince Zhong Siqiao to pretend to be his girlfriend for his grandparents. Zhong Siqiao initially refuses, but Su Haoan's persistence eventually wins her over.

On New Year's Eve, Wen Yifan brings a gift to Uncle Zhang, the station's security guard, who is spending the holiday with his family. Wen Yifan feels a pang of loneliness, video-chatting with Zhong Siqiao, who is surrounded by her lively family. Wen Yifan is all alone with her pet, Dian Dian, and hasn't even had dumplings yet. Just then, the doorbell rings – it's Sang Yan.

Sang Yan heads straight to the kitchen, claiming he made too much dough and needs help eating it. His cooking skills are impressive, and Wen Yifan feels a sense of warmth and togetherness thanks to his presence. She finally gets to enjoy dumplings on New Year's Eve.

They sit together on the couch, watching the Spring Festival Gala, with Dian Dian occupying a prime spot between them. Wen Yifan's mother calls, and Wen Yifan looks at her mother on the screen, feeling a sense of distance and questioning the meaning of the holiday.

Before Wen Yifan falls asleep watching the Gala, she wishes Sang Yan a happy new year. The scene triggers a flashback for Sang Yan, recalling Wen Yifan's past hardships: her father's death, her mother's remarriage, and the uncertainty of her living situation. He remembers being there for her during that time. She was sent to live with her grandmother, who passed away shortly after, and then had to live with her aunt's family, feeling like a burden.

Another flashback shows a young Wen Yifan losing twenty yuan given to her by her aunt. Terrified of being sent away again, she calls Sang Yan for help. He lends her the money and tells her to call him anytime she needs it, no matter the amount.

The next morning, Zhong Siqiao and Xiang Lang visit Wen Yifan to exchange New Year's greetings. Xiang Lang needs to use the restroom, and Wen Yifan directs him to her bathroom, but he feels uncomfortable and uses Sang Yan's instead. Sang Yan calls Wen Yifan and hears a male voice, leading to a misunderstanding. Wen Yifan quickly ushers her friends out.

Zhong Siqiao is called away by Su Haoan to practice being his "girlfriend," leaving Xiang Lang to take Wen Yifan home. After a day out, Wen Yifan remembers the porridge Sang Yan prepared for her that morning. She rushes home to find it gone, with Sang Yan casually drinking coffee nearby. Wen Yifan admits her mistake and offers to accept a "punishment," to which Sang Yan replies that he wants to bring someone home for dinner, too.
