Spoiler Alert
The drama heats up in Episode 7 of "The First Frost." At school, things get tense when the teacher calls in both Wen Yifan's and Sang Yan's parents. It turns out Sang Yan got into a fight because of Wen Yifan. When the topic of puppy love comes up, Wen Yifan flat-out denies any relationship, but Sang Yan isn't shy about admitting his feelings for her, saying it's a one-sided crush. Sang Yan's parents, surprisingly chill, say he has good taste, but advise him to cool it until college. On the other hand, Wen Yifan's aunt is furious, chewing her out and even suggesting she transfer to a school in Beiyu.
Back at the apartment, it's day 23 of Sang Yan and Wen Yifan's "cohabitation." Sang Yan asks Wen Yifan to pick up a pizza, her favorite kind. Wen Yifan assumes it's for a girlfriend, but it's actually for Sang Yan's younger sister, Sang Zhi. Sang Zhi recognizes Wen Yifan, and they reminisce about a time when Sang Zhi supposedly "got lost." Turns out, it was all a setup by Sang Yan! He had his little sister pretend to be lost and cry in front of Wen Yifan, all so he could swoop in and offer to treat Wen Yifan to ice cream. Sneaky, right?
Later that evening, Sang Yan cooks dinner and asks Sang Zhi to invite Wen Yifan to join them. Wen Yifan agrees, mostly for Sang Zhi's sake. Sang Zhi, who prefers to be called "Zhi Zhi," asks Wen Yifan why she didn't attend Nanwu University, which has a better program for her major. Wen Yifan avoids the question, and even Sang Yan is curious, but she brushes it off. Sang Yan gets annoyed and leaves the table.
Sang Zhi, ever the perceptive little sister, asks Wen Yifan point-blank if she and her brother ever dated. Wen Yifan denies it, but Sang Zhi mentions hearing her parents talk about Sang Yan's high school sweetheart. Sang Yan, overhearing this, rushes in and hustles Sang Zhi out the door. On their way out, Sang Zhi scolds Sang Yan for being rude to Wen Yifan, telling him he needs to be more charming, like "Jiaxu Ge" (Brother Jiaxu). Sang Yan drops off his sister and heads back to the shared apartment. He finds Wen Yifan already in her room and tries to get her attention by making noise, but she doesn't come out. Bored, he goes to the balcony to watch fireworks and is surprised to see Wen Yifan there too. She shares that she loved fireworks as a kid.
Meanwhile, Su Haoan brings Zhong Siqiao home to meet his grandparents, having her pose as his ex-girlfriend, Wang Linlin. Zhong Siqiao goes all-in, changing her style to match the grandparents' taste and memorizing Wang Linlin's life story. However, Su Haoan accidentally calls her by her real name. Zhong Siqiao covers it up, but Grandma isn't fooled, especially when she realizes Zhong Siqiao can't handle spicy food, unlike the real Wang Linlin, who's from Hunan. After dinner, Grandma confronts Zhong Siqiao, who comes clean.
Wen Yifan receives a red envelope from her mother, delivered by the building's Uncle Zhang. It's a belated Lunar New Year gift. Realizing it's the Lantern Festival, Wen Yifan remembers how her dad always prioritized her mom's feelings, even when he was hospitalized. She calls her mom, who is overjoyed and asks her to come home. Wen Yifan agrees.
When Wen Yifan arrives, she finds her uncle and cousin absent. Her mother has made tangyuan (sweet rice balls) for her. Suddenly, a little boy, Zheng Jiaxin (her uncle and mother's son), comes running down the stairs. Wen Yifan's aunt follows, pushes her mother aside and immediately demands money from Wen Yifan for her son Wen Ming's upcoming wedding and new house. Wen Yifan is enraged, firing back at her aunt and telling her mother that she won't be coming back. She only came because of her father's dying wish to take care of her mother. Back at the apartment, Wen Yifan sees Sang Yan setting off fireworks and is reminded of the happy, carefree times she spent with her father doing the same.
