Criminal Scene: Episode 9

Spoiler Alert

The episode opens with Jiang Xiao Tang lost in thought at school, unaware that someone is secretly taking pictures of her. Gu Zhen, the police captain, is reflecting on the incident where Xiao Tang was pushed into the water. He had initially avoided the case, but he's now determined to discuss it with Kong Rubai. Kong Rubai reveals that the surveillance cameras in the area were all in blind spots, and their investigation hasn't turned up any leads. Frustrated, Gu Zhen snaps his chopsticks in half. He messages Xiao Tang, promising to have dinner with her and pick her up after work.

Meanwhile, Anna is taking art lessons from Teacher Wang, but she's clearly distracted. She's been trying to reconcile with Xiao Tang, even sending gifts, but nothing has worked. Teacher Wang tells her that what Xiao Tang wants is her forgiveness, and the method doesn't matter. Anna agrees, determined to succeed, no matter what it takes. A disturbing image appears in Anna's painting: a woman with a graceful figure, but with a gaping hole in her chest.

Gu Zhen can't reach Xiao Tang by phone. Xiao Tang is skateboarding home when she trips over some pebbles scattered on the road. A seemingly kind stranger stops to ask if she's okay, but Xiao Tang brushes it off and continues on. Gu Zhen arrives on his bike, relieved to find Xiao Tang, though she's limping. He had been worried when he couldn't reach her, fearing something had happened. Because Xiao Tang is hurt, Gu Zhen puts his clothes on the bike seat and pushes her along.

Later, Gu Zhen receives another threatening letter, stating, "I've been waiting for you." He then gets news that something has happened to Xiao Tang. Kong Rubai returns home to find that someone has been there. His photos have been tampered with, and a message on his bathroom mirror urges him to seek revenge. A mysterious phone call follows, asking Kong Rubai if he's willing to accept his current situation.

It turns out Xiao Tang has been attacked by a boy who was following her. She thought he was a pervert, and Gu Zhen nearly beats him up when he arrives. The boy, Li Qi, explains that Xiao Tang is known for being tough and has stood up for him before. He claims he was only trying to protect her because he'd seen a man following her and even managed to take a blurry photo of the man's back. Li Qi also captured a photo of someone scattering pebbles on the road, which caused Xiao Tang's fall. He says he was trying to warn Xiao Tang today, but ended up being attacked instead. The photos are too unclear to be of much use, but Gu Zhen takes them anyway and sees Xiao Tang home. To ensure Xiao Tang's safety, Gu Zhen decides to escort her to and from school from now on. Xiao Tang's sister calls, blaming Gu Zhen for Xiao Tang's troubles and demanding that Xiao Tang move into university dorms. Gu Zhen is worried that he's the reason Xiao Tang is in danger.

Gu Zhen visits Kong Rubai's place and sees the threatening letter. The case is officially open, but there are no solid leads. Gu Zhen suspects the person is targeting him. He believes the person following Xiao Tang might be the same person who killed Yin Qing, but he has no idea who it could be. Su Qian offers to have her father help watch over Xiao Tang, providing some relief to Gu Zhen.

Xiao Tang eventually reconciles with Anna, who uses a "damsel in distress" tactic to win her over. Xiao Tang goes to Anna and Teacher Wang's place to paint. Gu Zhen calls Xiao Tang to tell her he's arranged for someone to follow and protect her, and Xiao Tang, without any suspicion, reveals this information to Anna and Teacher Wang.
