The series opens with a tense scene on a city bus. A young woman is being harassed by a punk with long hair. Su Chengcheng (played by Landy Li), a seemingly ordinary girl, intervenes. When the punk turns his aggression towards her, Su Chengcheng swiftly takes him down with a judo throw. As he gets up, he sees Su Chengcheng's face briefly change, terrifying him so much that he wets himself. However, no one else on the bus seems to notice anything unusual about her.
The story then flashes back three months. Tang Qi (played by Tan Jianci), a sharp and observant young man, is playing tennis with his best friend, Gu Yu. Tang Qi loses the game because he is distracted by the sun reflecting off of someone's phone. While resting, Tang Qi analyzes people in his friend's social media, realizing the potential of the beauty industry, and how people use makeup and other methods to enhance their appearance.
Meanwhile, Su Chengcheng is heading to an interview at Fandai, a cosmetics company. In the elevator, she meets two other candidates who are dismissive of her. During the interview, the interviewers are immediately critical of Su Chengcheng, saying her appearance doesn't match her photo, and they reject her without further questions. Feeling humiliated, Su Chengcheng confronts the interviewers before leaving.
Dejected, Su Chengcheng drowns her sorrows with alcohol in a park. Her best friend calls, worried that the overly edited photo she made for Su Chengcheng caused the rejection, but Su Chengcheng reassures her. She then shares a bench with a young man who also seems down on his luck, sharing a beer with him and venting her frustrations. An invitation to a high school reunion arrives on her phone, reminding her of a past crush. A cleaning lady interrupts her, telling her the young man has left, leaving behind a book and a gift box.
Back home, Su Chengcheng's parents mistake the gifts for presents from a suitor. Su Chengcheng asks her older sister, Su Qingli, about attending the reunion, but Su Qingli is indifferent.
Su Qingli demands to switch rooms with Su Chengcheng, forcing her younger sister into the room with a broken air conditioner. Su Chengcheng, back in her old room, watches old high school videos, reminiscing. Their mother comes in, mistaking Su Chengcheng for Su Qingli, and urges her to find a boyfriend for Su Chengcheng.
Tang Qi is working in his lab when Gu Yu comes in to discuss the upcoming reunion. Tang Qi initially expresses disinterest but starts to reminisce about Su Chengcheng from their high school days when Gu Yu asks if there was anyone he cared about back then.
Su Chengcheng's best friend, Wenwen, is determined to make her shine at the reunion and takes her shopping for a new outfit. Wenwen wants her to wear a dress, but Su Chengcheng opts for a more comfortable skirt-pants combo.
At the reunion, Su Chengcheng and Wenwen arrive at the hotel. Su Chengcheng helps a guy who is struggling to move some beers, surprising him with her strength. Tang Qi's arrival causes a stir, becoming the center of attention. Su Chengcheng, however, becomes shy and self-conscious upon seeing him. The classmates' conversations revolve around their careers. Tang Qi, not wanting to brag, claims he's just working at a small company. Su Chengcheng is recognized by one of her sister's classmates and, to avoid embarrassment, lies about working at Fandai. However, another classmate's boyfriend works there, exposing Su Chengcheng's lie, making her feel humiliated in front of her crush.
Later, while serving beer, Su Chengcheng accidentally sprays Tang Qi, ruining her makeup. Tang Qi offers to take a picture of her, and when she asks why, he says it's because she looks awful. Hurt, Su Chengcheng leaves. On her way home, she buys all the flowers from an elderly street vendor, paying a generous price. The vendor gifts her a delicate bracelet in return.
