Plot Synopsis

"The Source of River" (Da He Zhi Shui) is a Chinese drama series focusing on the world of tax investigation. The story follows Zheng Hao, the director of the Risk Control Bureau of the Lingshui District Tax Bureau in Xindong City, who is a whiz with big data. He's so good at his job that he getspromoted to lead the Second Inspection Division of the Inspection Bureau.

However, Xindong City isn't aspeaceful as it seems. A massive tax evasion network lurks beneath the surface. Zheng Hao's investigations into fraudulent value-added tax invoices soon lead him to connections with his former girlfriend, Liang Jinqiu, who has returned after years of working abroad, and his college classmate, Zhao Mingda, aprofessor facing a desperate situation due to his daughter's serious illness.

Zhao Mingda, needing money for his daughter's medical bills, gets involved with criminals,participating in illegal activities like falsifying research and development expenses to reduce taxes. Liang Jinqiu, on the other hand, walks a legal tightrope due to her family's business interests. Zheng Hao finds himself tobetween the law and hispersonal relationships, facing intense conflicts with his former friends and lover as he relentlesslypursues the truth.

As the investigation deepens, Zheng Hao uncovers a vast criminal enterprise involving bothpoliticians and businesspeople. A veteran of the tax system, Xiong Yi, turns out to be one of the masterminds, having embezzled billions in subsidies a decade ago during the restructuring of state-owned enterprises and is now laundering the money using "golden invoices". Zheng Hao faces numerous obstacles and dangers, including frame-ups by the criminal groupand internal divisions, but he never gives up.

Ultimately, with Zhao Mingda's help, Zheng Hao successfully exposes the criminal group's crimes and brings criminals like Feng Dakai to justice. Zhao Mingda, after his daughter's death, chooses to stand on the side of justice, making amends for hispast mistakes. Zheng Hao and Liang Jinqiu also resolve their misunderstandings and reconcile. The series showcases the complexity and difficulty of tax investigation work, while also exploring the struggles and choices of human nature when faced with the conflict betweenprofit and morality.
