Spoiler Alert
"The Quirky and the Charming" premiered on March 15, 2025, and the first episode introduces us to the contrasting worlds of Yi Ran and Xiao Mucheng.
Yi Ran is a street-smart, working-class girl struggling to make ends meet. She works at a convenience store, where she's not afraid to stand up for what's right, even if it means losing her job. On Valentine's Day, she's stuck working, handing out flyers in a mascot costume, and disappointed when her boyfriend, Jiang Chen, cancels their date due to work. Later, she confronts her boss about selling expired bread, leading to a confrontation where she cleverly uses a food inspection report to get her unpaid wages. Yi Ran's motto is that "bad reviews are her attitude" – she's a fighter, and she won't let life knock her down.
Meanwhile, Xiao Mucheng is the meticulous and perfectionist Head of Guest Services at the upscale Quanhai Resort Hotel. His life is all about maintaining a flawless image and avoiding negative reviews at all costs. He's shown dealing with demanding guests, like Mrs. Liu, who complains about a stain on the showerhead. To appease her, Xiao Mucheng goes to extreme lengths, even drinking a glass of water from the showerhead to prove its cleanliness. He also deals with a lost button from a Mr. Chen's suit, already having a plan in motion to find an exact replacement.
Yi Ran's world takes a turn when she discovers Jiang Chen's infidelity, leading her to dramatically dump him at a coffee shop. Her best friend, Ling Yishu, gifts her a stay at a five-star hotel (the Quanhai Resort) to cheer her up. Interestingly, the replacement button Xiao Mucheng needs is acquired by Ling Yishu from Yi Ran. When Xiao Mucheng comes to collect the button, Yi Ran is slightly tipsy, and Xiao Mucheng ends up with an upset stomach. Yi Ran takes him to a rather unpleasant public restroom, and in the process, he drops the precious button. He has to retrieve it and ensure it's thoroughly disinfected before giving it to the client.
Yi Ran, now single and ready to enjoy her hotel stay, ends up causing a disturbance with her loud, drunken singing. Xiao Mucheng is called to handle the complaint, only to find Yi Ran mistaking him for her ex-boyfriend. She ends up hitting him over the head with a beer bottle, knocking him unconscious. They both fall asleep on the same bed and wake up the next morning in a compromising position. Yi Ran is mortified, while Xiao Mucheng tries to calmly explain the situation. She throws him out in anger.
The episode ends with Yi Ran checking out and being charged for minibar items she didn't consume. Later, overhearing the front desk staff gossiping about her, she retaliates by posting a negative review and a scathing online post, sparking some online attention. This sets up the central conflict of the series: the clash between Yi Ran, who embraces imperfections and fights for fairness, and Xiao Mucheng, who strives for perfection and avoids negativity at all costs.
