"Hanging Mirrors" Episode 6: Holding Back and Hidden Truths

The investigation is hitting some serious roadblocks, even with new leads popping up. The biggest problem? Shen Chao, the guy they already have in custody, is stonewalling them. He's willing to take the fall for everything rather than give up any useful information. Xiao Xing suspects there's a reason for this: the consequences of talking must be worse than taking the blame.

Meanwhile, Chief Yang and Director Cao swing by the task force to offer encouragement and check on the case's progress. Xu Xiao gets Xiao Xing to lay out the whole situation. Even though Shen Chao isn't talking, they've discovered he has a close relationship with a woman named Du Lanlan. There's been a lot of money moving between them. Xu Xiao decides Du Lanlan is worth a visit.

Xu Xiao and his team find Du Lanlan, but she's not exactly chatty either. She clams up. Xu Xiao, playing the only card he has, uses her kid as leverage, and it works. Du Lanlan agrees to see Shen Chao. At the detention center, Shen Chao sees his kid and Du Lanlan, and his resolve crumbles. He spills everything he knows.

Turns out, Shen Chao is very knowledgeable about explosives. He also knows that during the tomb raiding, there was a second explosion, meaning someone else messed with things. He figures this person is a pro, one of maybe five people in the business capable of that. The reason Shen Chao kept quiet was to protect his kid and Du Lanlan.

Shen Chao reveals that Zhou Daming's boss is a weird dude, super into feng shui. He sleeps in a coffin every night! The tomb that Shen Chao and Zhou Daming raided was based on a tip from this boss, and Shen Chao even drove Zhou Daming to meet him before the job.

Xu Xiao, armed with this new info, heads to the boss's place. The room is empty. But when Xu Xiao opens the coffin, he finds Hu Xiaomin, the guy they met at Zhou Daming's house, dead inside. Xu Xiao notices marks on Hu Xiaomin's wrists, suggesting he was tied up and struggled. Lin Guoqiang spots a leg wound and remembers the rainy night fight with the black-clad figure – he'd slashed the guy's leg.

Not wanting to miss anything, Lin Guoqiang brings Chen Nan in to see if she can find anything useful. And she does! They find some antiques in the boss's room, confirming it's Hu Xiaomin's place. They even find photos of Zhou Jiahei. Lin Guoqiang starts to suspect Hu Xiaomin's identity and heads back to Zhouli Village to talk to Third Grandpa.

Lin Guoqiang tells Third Grandpa about Hu Xiaomin's death and suggests that Hu Xiaomin was Zhou Jiahei's son. He knows Third Grandpa is holding back. With Hu Xiaomin gone, Third Grandpa finally tells the whole story. Zhou Jiahei's father and Third Grandpa were from the same generation. Third Grandpa's son got sick, but they didn't have the money for treatment. Zhou Jiahei, who'd made money outside the village, saved Third Grandpa's son's life. Hu Xiaomin was Zhou Jiahei's illegitimate son. Zhou Jiahei asked Third Grandpa to remove Hu Xiaomin from the Zhou family tree because he knew he might get into trouble and wanted to provide his son with a way out. Third Grandpa agreed to repay Zhou Jiahei for saving his son. Besides Third Grandpa, no one else knew about Zhou Jiahei's secret son. Zhou Jiahei did all this because he foresaw that something might happen to him, so he left a way out for his son.
